An Edudemic

One of the great travesties of the modern student and child growing up is that there is a wealth of information at our fingertips, but a poverty of critical thinking about it. What's more, is that students, parents and educators alike are becoming increasingly short with attention spans, since notoriously short phrases and buzzwords circle places like twitter and buzzfeed where journalism has been reduced to a paragraph or less.
What will end up happening to our children if we don't get  grip on this? We'll end up having an elite class of critical thinkers that 'get it' and a class of people who just float along, never mastering anything but their iPhone Twitter posts, and the resulting aliteracy of the vast majority of the population. They will be literate, of course, having learned to read, but aliterate in terms of reading between the lines, having the attention span to read complex articles and books as well as not being able to think or write critically.
It's already happening. Be warned.
